Berlin Day 2

After a long successful day, we decided to sleep in until our check out time at 10. Then we headed to museum island. Here, Berlin has 5 big museums. We decided to go to the Neues Musuem because it was about ancient Egypt and it was the newest. Once inside, we got the audio guide to help out our journey. Overall, we weren’t too impressed. After visiting other museums in London and Paris, this one had similar stuff (statues, pottery, armor, hieroglyphics, etc). The one thing that did surprise us was Queen Nefertiti’s bust (face) – an Egyptian queen over 3000 years ago. Her face and hair were in mint condition. It was pretty incredible. Other than that, it was the typical museum stuff,

Distance shot. We weren't allowed to take photos of it.

Next we went to the Scholls Charlottesburg – a HUGE palace built in the 1800s. We didn’t go in, but we walked around the gardens in the back. The place was spectacular. All the great leaders of Germany had a special room in there and their rooms were decorated with only that which is fit for a king.

Afterwards we headed across town to a Turkish Market. This was a real market with a vendors hustling and bustling trying to sell their products. Most were food stations (fresh fruits, veggies, cheese, meats, dried fruit, spices, etc) but there was also clothes and jewelry. It was pretty neat. We got a carton of strawberries and a spinach and cheese flat bread thingy….. we forget the name, but it was good.

Following the market, we went over one of Berlin’s iconic bridges to the East side gallery. Here a stretch of about 500 yards of paintings on the Berlin Wall. A lot were way over the top with their abstract art, while others got to the point about having peace. Pretty cool.

Then we caught a train back to the heart of town to tourist shop. Next we had dinner. We found a sausage shop and got 3 different kinds to share, Mojaron, Brat, and Currywurst. All were exceptionally great in their own way. If you thought our brie streak was bad, our consectative meals with sausage is probably worse. We had it for lunch and dinner both days. For lunches, we would stop and get “street meat.” It was delicious and only 1.50 euros. How they served it was funny. A 10 inch wiener in a 4 inch bun. Haha. It was great though. After dinner we grabbed our backs and headed for the train station for our overnight train to Munich.

Berlin was a very very VERY unique place. Maybe it was because we learned a lot on our bike tour, but the history in Berlin was hard to top. It was hard to pass a building that didn’t have a story behind it. And to think the wall was only up 20 years ago kind of blew our minds. We were too young to remember it, but relearning it as adults and quite shocking. The new Berlin culture was fun, fresh, and positive. We believe they want to forget their horrible past and move on. We didn’t see a picture or see Hilter’s name written down the whole time. Its like they are trying to erase him from their past. We will miss Berlin (like every other city… we know), but it was a fun city, with a lot to offer, and a lot of history.
